Two New Board Members Appointed at the November 16, 2009 Board of Directors Meeting

The Board of Directors appointed Liz Sandler and Don Anderson to the Board of Directors. The new Directors, including Judy Mines and Betty Tipton have already shown a strong desire and willingness to assist the Forum in pursuing its goals. We welcome them on the Board and look forward to a revitalized Eastham Forum


Annual Eastham Forum Membership Meeting Held on Monday October 19th

The Annual Membership Meeting of the Eastham Forum was held on Monday, October 19th, 2009 at the Eastham Methodist Church Hall. Special Recognition was made to Gerry Gibson, a long time Member, Director and President of the Eastham Forum. Gerry is a true Gentleman and such a hard worker behind the scenes. As a special thank you for his service, a tree will be planted at the Eastham Arboretum in his name.

Also recognized at the Meeting, Vida DeMale and the entire EFFI volunteer crew. This year the EFFI's effort produced the most beautiful, lucious display of flowers at the "flower islands" throughout the Town.

Loretta Nielson was also singled out for her consistent efforts, behind the scenes, with the work and time she puts in, as well as motivating the membership of the Forum and Directors.

Kathy Sette was recognized for her quiet behind the scenes work assisting her husband, Al Sette, Treasurer of the Forum.

Over the past year, a few new members of the Board of Directors were appointed, Peter Markunas, Ron Edson, Bob Mumford, Judy Cannon. These new Directors hit the team running, with their volunteerism, input, and hard work. Although cyclical members are appointed during the Annual Membership Meeting, vacancies come up throughout the year and replacements are appointed by the Board of Directors. The same is true for Officers. this pass year Gerry Gibson stepped down as President and the Board appointed Pete Markunas as President. The Secretary also stepped down, and the Board appointed Ron Edson to fill that position, as well as appointing him as Editor of the Forum.

This year's Annual Membership Meeting elected Bob Mumford as Vice President and Ron Edson as Secretary of the Forum.

The Membership also appointed Jody Mines and Betty Tipton onto the Board of Directors.

Following the "business" portion of the Annual Meeting, an excellent, well coordinated powerpoint presentation was made to the Membership by Clay Schofield, of the Cape Cod Commission and Karst Hoogenboom of the Cape Cod National Seashore.

Mr. Schofield and Mr. Hoogenboom presented the on-going efforts of the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) that has been introduced on the Cape and has been proven to be a successful project. The system is being intergrated into an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) with GPS monitors on all the busses. This allows for realtime monitoring of the location of the busses. This information is then projected in realtime onto a website link. Click on the link CCRTA Realtime and you can see exactly where the busses are, their direction, etc., allowing you to plan your trip and estimate the time of arrival of your CCRTA Shuttle Bus.

Additional on-going studies involve the condition of the Seashore beaches, as well as local Town Beaches on the Bay. Projections have been made in anticipation to probable loss of parking spaces and other facilities due to erosion over the next few decades.

Bike Trail improvements and studies were discussed, traffic projections, and other real concerns for us all were presented and discussed.

The presentation was extremely informative and well received by the audience. In the near future a portion of the Eastham Forum Website will be devoted to links, reports and other information regarding these matters.

The Eastham Forum was fortunate to have the opportunity for such an excellent presentation and information sharing and sincerely thank the Cape Cod Commission and the Cape Cod National Seashore, particularly Clay Schofield and Karst Hoogenboom for devoting their time in the preparation and presentation.


Correction from Previous Posting Regarding By-Law Update: The Board of Directors created a By-Law Review Committee consisting of Loretta Neilsen, Judy Cannon and Bob Mumford. This Committee spent countless hours reviewing, discussing and developing changes to the Eastham Forum By-Laws in order to clarify, eliminate ambiguity, and update the By-Laws to improve the effectiveness of the Forum's activities and operating procedures.

The proposed changes were to be presented to the General Membership at the 2009 Annual Meeting. However, although the Board concured with most of the approved changes at the Board Meeting on August 19th, one key change required more debate at the September 16th Board Monthly Meeting.

The Board of Directors could not reach a consensus on a proposed change to the procedure on election of Officers. The remaining issues were mostly "housecleaning" changes. The Board decided not to present proposed changes to the By-Laws to the General Membership at this year's annual meeting.

The matter of selection of the Forum Officers will be further evaluated by the Board, and may result in a reach-out to the General Membership for opinions.

Please make it a point to attend this year's Annual Membership Meeting, as it will be instructive, and it will give you the opportunity to provide feedback to the Board on the future directions of the Mission of the Forum and the maintenance and enhancement of the quality of life in our Community.

Also, the Eastham Forum, Inc. has a very modest operating expense as all our Board Members are volunteers and any proceeds that we receive go to printing costs, mailing costs and similar expenses as well as charitable donations to our Annual Scholarship Program, and Lower Cape Charities and Services. Donations made to EFFI, the Eastham Forum Flower Island Committee go directly to the purchase of the flowers and materials that the EFFI volunteers plant and maintain during the summer months.

Please indicate if you wish to be considered for membership on our Board of Directors. The Forum is always anxious to appoint ambitious, concerned citizens who are willing to share their time to make the efforts of The Forum successful and worthwhile for our community.

 


Information Regarding the Eastham Forum

The Eastham Forum is a non-profit community organization founded over 25 years ago. Since its inception, the Community has progressed from a modest community run by the elected Selectmen to an organized Town Municipality administered by the Town Administrator. Prior to the new municipal governance, matters affecting the community were resolved in a "tug of war" method during Town Meetings. Staff planning was scant, and the citizens of the Community were often uninformed.

Although some things have changed, e.g., a well managed and operating staff, more availabe resources to refer to, such as the Cape Cod Commission, Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management, the Democracy of the Town Meeting Governance continues.

We as citizens of Eastham have the responsibility to decide on the directions that the Community progresses as well as the Preservation of the Quality of Life within our Community. This responsibility is vitally important for the Health, Safety, Education, Opportunities, and our wonderful natural amenities within our Community.

The Eastham Forum is made up of member volunteers who are dedicated in addressing those issues, informing the Citizens, taking active roles in Town Committees, hosting public meetings, with guest speakers discussing essential issues affecting our community, hosting Candidate Nights prior to elections, provides funds and services for Beach Cleanup, provides funds to other charitable and non-profit organizations supporting our Community, and providing an Annual Scholarship program for our Nauset High School graduates to assist in their educational pursuits.

The Forum is always seeking new members, either passive or active volunteers who may either either share the common interest of the Forum or are interesting in actively assisting in our goals of Preserving and Enhancing of the Quality of Life in our Community.
